Yoga is a system of self development, awareness and transformation, physically and mentally, a systematic science of enquiry to study your own nature. It is a path of increasing your sense of well being and freeing you from your neuroses so you can live more virtually. Although the roots of yoga are lost in the mists of time, we do have an enduring verbal description of the science dating back more thnt 2,500 years in “The Sutras of Patanjali” which is the foundation of all existing systems of yoga. The ‘yogic’ view is based a super practical view…that an individual is a spiritual being, not only physical and mental. This increasing awareness through the path of your inner self, leads you to experience your life with more peace of mind, and a soulful capacity to move through life’s constant changes and complications.
A Yoga session may include some or all of the following:
Pranayama: intentional breathing patterns and rhythms for life energy
Mantra: Repetition of healing sounds usually Sanskrit, for soothing the mind
Chanting: The Yoga of Sound, chanting is a yoga practice for many, showing through studies and personal reports of many, that it inspires one to feel great! Join in with Vedic and Sanskrit chants of the ages, English, African and other culturally divine songs of heart and spirit!
Asanas: poses or excercises
Shivasana: usually after asanas, learning where the resistance is in your body and practicing a relaxation response of your body to your mind while lying supine. Also a time for the body and mind to absorb the effects of a yoga practice or exercise.
Dharaan: Concentration: focusing
Dhyaan: the practice of meditation whereby you become the observer of your own mind, or maintain concentration on an object of divinity. You may seek this practice for health, self awareness, or divine presence.
Many of the concepts of Yoga are contained within religion. There is always controversy surrounding the subject of yoga and religion, because they often co - mingle. Any conclusion saying its just this way or that will not be found. Yoga has become popularized in the west through the Vedic teachings of Hinduism, but that doesn’t mean you become a Hindu by practicing yoga. On the other hand if you decide you want to become a Hindu or start in on any new religion that’s ok too! Yoga means, “union” where your limited identity finds joy and solace in the union with infinite identity. Yoga can offer a deep experience and understanding of your religion. You may find that yoga practices blend well with your religious practices or you may feel more comfortable keeping your religion and yoga practice separate. The system of yoga can be pursued with no religious basis as well. It is very open as to choice in the matter.
According to the medical view, yoga practice is successful for many because of the balance created in the nervous and glandular system which directly governs all other systems and organs of the physical body. Of course the asanas, (yoga poses or exercises) develop more strength and stamina physically and, very importantly, increases the strength, health and stamina of your mind. Yoga has been researched and has been shown to offer help in areas of weight management, diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, digestive disorders, smoking cessation, asthma, heart conditions and more! Most people will tell you that they have found a new way to be, a sense of being in grace and more ease in life after coming to the practice of yoga.
